Corrigin Town Hall

- The Corrigin Town Hall was built during 1928 to be completed in time to celebrate the centenary of the foundation of Western Australia in 1929.

- The hall was a result of considerable community and Roads Board effort and was the subject of controversy, as a lot of people were against it. The Corrigin Town Hall was opened on 29 March 1929, by James Adams, the Chairman of the Corrigin Roads Board, and CP Wansborough MP.

- The Corrigin Amateur Dramatic Society was founded in July 1929, and in November that year the Narrogin Operatic and Dramatic Society performed the Geisha at the Town Hall.

- The Hall was the venue of community and celebratory activities which included numerous balls; balls during the war, the annual Show Ball, the Victory Ball and Debutant balls.

- The Town Hall and Corrigin Road Board Office (1923) were designed by renowned architect Percy W. Harrison, who was a foundation member of the West Australian Institute of Architects.

- It has been the venue for the annual ANZAC Day celebrations since 1930 and in the 1940s and 1950s, also served as a court room and infant health clinic.

- Today, the hall continues to be used for community celebrations and for badminton competitions.




Remembrance Day

This year 11 November marks the 96th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Narembeen

- Narembeen is situated 286km from Perth in the Wheatbelt area of Western Australia and is predominantly an agricultural region with the main agricultural pursuits being cereal cropping, cattle and sheep.

- Located strategically between Wave Rock and the Great Eastern Highway, and only three hours east of Perth

- Narembeen, named after its aboriginal heritage as the 'place of the female emu'.

Meckering Earthquake (1968)

- At 10.59 am on 14th October 1968, the town of  Meckering was destroyed by an earthquake. The magnitude of the Meckering earthquake was 6.9 on the Richter Scale making it one of the largest recorded in the seismic history of Australia.

- Fortunately nobody was killed.

The Big Camera in Meckering

- The Big Camera Photographic Museum is situated 134 kilometres east of Perth right on the Great Eastern Highway at Meckering.

- The Big Camera Museum is the only museum of photography open to the public anywhere in Western Australia and the building is shaped like a giant camera with displays of over 1,000 items including cameras (dating from eight years before photography was invented right up to the present), projectors, enlargers, processing equipment, magic lantern projectors and slides, movie cameras and projectors( from nine and a half millimetres up to super eight millimetres),epidiascopes, zoetropes, phantascopes, kaleidoscopes and three dimensional photography.

- Also available is information regarding the Meckering earthquake that occurred in 1968. Photographs and newspaper articles are on display and local tourism information is available.






Meckering

- Meckering is situated 134 kilometres east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway.

- Meckering is located within the Shire of Cunderdin.

- Originally known as Beebering, the name Meckering was chosen by explorer, John Forest with the official declaration of the townsite taking place on 17th February 1887.

- The first settlement was made in 1887 about 3kms north of Beebeering Hill but it was not until April 1889 that the surrounding land was declared an agricultural area.

Anti-social behaviour can be a problem on the buses from time to time. Both passenger and driver safety is an issue. The EPCSG (East Perth Community Safety Group) will continue to engage with the WA Police, Transperth and the Transperth Union to ensure any isusues are dealt with.

Cottesloe Beach

- Cottesloe Beach is a 1.5 km stretch of west-facing sand and bluffs, which extends north from Mudurup Rocks to the southern rocks of Swanbourne Beach.

- As Cottesloe beach is one of the busiest beaches in Western Australia the Town of Cottesloe does not allow the beachfront to be hired for wedding receptions or corporate parties.

- Crown Perth is an entertainment complex located in Burswood, Western Australia.

-  Only minutes from the Perth CBD and both domestic and international airports.

- Officially opened in 1985.

- The complex consists of a casino, convention centre with meeting rooms, theatre, two ballrooms and, along with a numerous restaurants and bars.

- It also features two hotels: Crown Metropol Perth and Crown Promenade Perth.

Avon Descent

- The Avon Descent is Western Australia’s own unique sporting event that attracts competitors and spectators from throughout Australia and overseas.

- It  was first held in 1973 with just 49 competitors, no rules, no officials, no checkpoints and very few spectators. In the years since, over 25,000 people have competed in the Avon Descent, from novices and families, to World and Olympic Champions.

- The Avon Descent passes through some of Western Australia’s most picturesque country.

- Travel through the farming regions of historic Northam and Toodyay, forested national parks, steep gorges, the Swan Valley vineyard region and, eventually, into the tidal waters of the upper Swan River.

The vast Nullarbor Plain is the world’s largest limestone karst landscape covering an area of 270,000 square km, extending 2000 km between Norseman and Ceduna. Two thirds of the Nullarbor is within Western Australia and one third is in South Australia.

Old Perth Fire Station

- The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Education and Heritage Centre is located in the original Perth Central Fire Station.

-  The building was commissioned under the authority of the Western Australian Fire Brigades Act of 1899 and was the first purpose built fire station in Western Australia.

- It was opened in 1901 and continued in operation until 1979.

- This building of historical diversity boasts a Federation Romanesque architectural style, it was registered on the Western Australian State Register of Heritage Places in 1989.

- DFES’s Education and Heritage Centre is open from 10am to 4:00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and admission is free.

- The Education and Heritage Centre is situated on the corner of Murray and Irwin Streets, Perth, near Royal Perth Hospital.

Gnowangerup

- The Shire of Gnowangerup is situated in the Great Southern area, 365 kilometres southeast of Perth and 140 kilometres north of Albany. It has a population of approximately 1400 people and features three towns – Gnowangerup, Ongerup and Borden.

- Gnowangerup, named as the place of the Mallee Fowl in the Aboriginal Noongar language.

- The Shire of Gnowangerup supports a population of 1271 (ABS 2011), a range of small to medium businesses many based around the agricultural and manufacturing industries and also a number of tourism enterprises.
